‘Twas the night before The Met Gala…
Tomorrow afternoon (Monday May 5), I’ll be reporting live from Madison Ave and uploading content in real-time to the Vogue App as a Vogue Contributor. Download the app here to tune in tomorrow on the “contributors tab” - (@dollymeckler) on the app.
How did this happen you ask?
For the last few years, I’ve headed up Madison Ave to stand outside The Carlyle Hotel, The Mark Hotel, and The Met to see not the celebs, but the people/the superfans/the young girlies who gather outside in the afternoon leading up to the event. You can see my 2024 highlights here and 2023 highlights here.
Ever since my wedding dress was featured in Vogue, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of the talented people behind the legacy media company. These wonderful women found out about the content I’ve been making the last few years and asked if I would like to be a Vogue App Contributor the day of The Met Gala. WOULD I EVER?! No brainer.
Vogue has eyes and ears in every corner surrounding The Met Gala. There’s coverage at the pre-parties, after parties, hotels, at the museum red carpet, and even in the celebrities’ suites. But the one place they realized they were missing coverage? The streets.
That’s where I come in. When I tell you I’ve been speaking an opportunity like this into existence for the last few years, I am not exaggerating. Reporting, talking, and learning from people on the street, combined with the glamorous energy of the UES on the first Monday in May is what I wait all year for. I love it. Big thank you to the fabulous ladies of Vogue for pulling me in!
These Madison Ave/5th Ave spectators are the real deal. They wait for hours for a glimpse of their favorite A-listers stepping out of their Black SUVs and into the hotels where they’ll be getting ready for the big night.
They are committed. Last year, I met a couple of gals who arrived outside The Carlyle at 8am. Attendees don’t start heading to The Met until around 5pm! The girls were so dedicated to the cause that they brought their textbooks and homework to study for the final exams they had later that evening (it is finals season after all!). I’ve met high schoolers in their uniforms who came right after school to wait and watch, people who bussed in from New Jersey, and even people who flew in from England to come and watch the commotion on 5th Ave. Note: The people from England were eating their first Black and White Cookie when I spoke to them (presumably from the famed William Greenberg Desserts down the block)…a quintessential NYC moment I felt glad to have witnessed.
These fans have shared with me how tall they’ve learned celebrities are based on door height (i.e., that Omar Apollo is about 1.5 inches shorter than the 76th street entrance door of The Carlyle). I was told that Emma Chamberlain’s dad was vlogging and really “sweet” because he stopped to say hello to some of Emma’s fans.
Not only is their celebrity reporting on point, but the predictions these people come up with (about who is showing up with who, who is going to be wearing what, etc etc etc) are precise enough to be featured on E! or People.com.
Their fashion takes are thoughtful and sharp. One young girl last year told me, “I need somebody, anybody, to wear necklaces. The lack of necklaces is killing me…I don’t want to see a naked neck.”
These New Yorkers give me LIFE. They are excited, knowledgeable, and activated. There’s no better place to be the first Monday in May. I mean it!
I’m sooo looking forward to this year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The content Vogue has been pushing out on social has been top notch. Colman Domingo hasn’t missed once in his interview clips. I love seeing Dapper Dan all over my feed, and the fact that Rihanna is rumored to be making her Met Gala comeback with A$AP Rocky, means we’ve already won.
I’ll have my mic with me, my 8.5 -month-pregnant-body will be outfitted in a dress painted by artist Jody Morlock (which I will share more about tomorrow), and hopefully I’ll be able to leave my umbrella at home (sadly, it’s forecasted to storm).
So join me, tomorrow afternoon on the Vogue App, my Instagram, and TikTok, where I’ll be giving you a front-row seat to the world’s most fabulous fashion event: the Upper East Side the first Monday in May!
"There’s no better place to be the first Monday in May" wait like actually. yes.
Go dolly!
